  1. We did this too, and our light color bunkbeds which cost $25 at a garage sale now rival the $1200 navy blue pottery barn ones.  Another answerer suggested the garage, two coats of paint, and gloss.  I would say he or she is dead on.  We skipped the polyuerthane finish and the paint was scratched within days.  It does only take a weekend if that's all you do.  The best way is to disassemble them and work on each piece separately.

  2. if your gunna paint it a light color, use a primer still, and then if you want to get it done fast, try getting a spray paint gun

  3. Metal frame or wood? Get the right paint for the job first, then take the mattresses off and move the frame to a well vented area.Clean with some type of cleaner to remove the oils from the frame. Lightly sand with a med. to fine sandpaper to rough up the surface. This will allow the paint to stick better. Wipe off with a dry cloth and apply two coats of paint. Make sure not to use too much at a time as it will run. Apply a light to medium coat each time.

  4. I don't have any websites---but I have painted my children's bunkbed's... once you choose your color I would just put them in the garage and go at it--I only had to apply 2 coats of paint & then I applied a top coat of gloss... it was only a weekend project & not difficult at all....if you have someone to help it goes alot faster..
