Question:

I want to paint my room..

At the moment it's "decorated" with this ugly old wallpaper that I need to paint over. Problem is it's covered with dark crayon marks and curses written in ink!

Should I coat it with white paint and then paint it a navy colour? (because that is the colour I want..) Or should I do something else? The wallpaper can not be removed. Also should I use a large brush or a roller?

Thanks. If you have any other tips about painting please tell me ^_^ Because this would be my first time xP

  1. coat it with white paint and use this white stuff (not paint) to cover crayons and wholes in the wall.

  2. Is there a reason on why the wall paper cannot be removed? if it went up it will come down! you might need to work at it but I definitely would take it off , first peel the top surface then by the use of a spray bottle filled with hot water spray the walls in small  segments and by using a scraper you will be able to remove the glued part that by  now should be soft and well soaked with the water, then you wash the wall down with TSP ,rinse , make any repairs that you need to do to the walls , prime the walls and then paint by using a roller and an angled brush to reach in tight spots , cover all the wood work with painter's tape this way you wont make a mess on them , I prefer using egg shell paint finish when I paint.

  3. I would strongly recommend removing the wallpaper at all costs.Do it now because doing it later in the future will be twice as hard.It is a pain in the *** but it must be done.If you decide to paint over it then go to Home Depo and buy Kilz shellock base primer. It's a spray. This is for your crayon spots or any other unpaintable stuff like magic marker or pen markings.Just spray affected areas.Buy TINTED primer towards your colour.Prime first and then paint. You could also go with two coats of paint under the condition that the wallpaper is not white or bright colour.Do not use white primer or paint as first step because you will have to go two to three coats to cover it.Its faster and cheaper if you tint the primer, then you only have to put one coat of paint.Primer is cheaper than paint.Remeber that if you paint the wallpaper the paint will seal it even more and if you decide to take it off in the future the water and/or chemicals cannot penetrate it.I'm a professional painter and ran into situations like this and trust me I charged an arm and a leg to remove painted wallpaper.

  4. I would suggest that you coat it with a white paint for sure. (at least two coats should be good) Then just paint whatever you want over that. Having a white base is good because it will cover up the wallpaper and ink, and will also help the other paint stick. Good luck!!
