My mum thinks that I have to have some sort of colour on my walls and that I cant put posters and photographs up to decorate after it's been painted. Has anyone got any ideas for how to convince her I want it to be white, not multicoloured?

  1. Yeah..just tell her you'll pay for it.

-and if you wanna paint your room white, try adding some black:D

  2. Suggest that posters etc. add color and do not do permanent damage.  Pin and nail holes are easily patched and painted over.  You may not like it after you paint, and would be willing to re-paint or add another color.  White makes the room appear larger, and by adding too many colors make the room "close in" on you.  Be sure to save your left-over paint for touch ups.

  3. How old are you?  It may not be practical for you to have white walls at your age.  They get dirty really quickly, and require a lot of cleaning -- if you're 12 or 112!

Painting is a big hassle, too.  Your mother may not have time to paint them or the money to hire painters.

Maybe you could suggest an off-white or tan shade that would give you the neutral look you want but wouldn't be the plain white your mother seems to dislike.

  4. White will make the room look brighter and bigger.

    White paint is cheaper!

  5. i would have thought your mum would be happy that you want it white.I like to keep the background simple in my house so i can bring in and change colour at will.

Maybe you could tell her it would be cheaper for her if you had white paint, anyway. And if you are going to put posters up and stuff, what's the point of a coloured background? I am totally with you on this one, kid!!

  6. There is nothing wrong with white paint. It's neutral and you can decorate easy with blue tack without damaging the walls. What has she against posters? My son's room is full of them and although I'm renting, I know the walls are all right. I for myself got all my family and friends on the wall on top of my PC. Love to look at them when I'm on it. Try to explain, you have your own taste and make it sound lovely not frightened. Wish you all the best!!

  7. Tell her its your room and you want to do it the way you want to, liek for example my mum done my room up the other month with coffee coloured wallpaper, beige curtains and like a marble effect wooden floor that looks like tiles, but i mean it looks like c**p! and ive told her that sevral times but she wont listen. I said to her i wanted it blue with carpet and no curtains, just blinds, and thats the way she does it, but if  telling her its your room doesnt work then i dont know, thats what i said aswell lol.

  8. I believe you will find that a white room was quite the fashion about the seventies (not to certain when)  To make a job of it you require a good base paper to paint over.  The idea is then obtain all your colour from curtains, carpets and what have you.  Actually its rather nice.

  9. Can you compromise on the color question, like having a light pastel color?  Pure white can be a little boring and hard on the eyes, and it's hard to keep clean.

I'm surprised to hear your mum wants your walls bare.  I'm sure you have decorations on the other walls of your home.  Have you asked her reasons?  When you know the reasoning behind her requirement, you can probably come to an understanding with her.  Maybe it's just posters she doesn't want, but art prints or other objects would be OK.

  10. Tell her you will pay for it and repaint it something else later if she really doesnt like it.

  11. tell her it's just paint and it can always be easily changed!
