  1. During my last trip I came across a website called http://www.cheaphotel-s.com . It has quite a large variety of hotels. You might wanna give it a try.

  2. Here is a nice, clean hostal, right on the Plaza Mayor in Madrid...nothing special, but the people in the Cafe on the ground floor were terrific!

You must go to Segovia...First century aqueduct and the Castle there is outstanding!!!!

And Toledo, the whole city is a trip through history!  (Mostly about El Greco, for me, though).

We enjoyed Avila, as well.  Tons of other day trips from Madrid...through Quixote country, Rioja wine country, Burgos.

For me, it´s all about the history and architecture...Photography, food, etc.  For untouched places, try Cuenca, and the province around the city...some pretty parks there.  I´ve never been, but the photos look great!  Try contacting the Official tourist office for information on any of the provincias.  They have terrific little folios that will tempt you, or check out the DK eyewitness book on Spain...you will want to do EVERYTHING in it.

Oh, and for a great little local´s place in Madrid to eat...try El Rey de Pimientos in the Plaza de la Puerta Cerrada...an easy walk south of the Plaza Mayor.

Be aware that if you buy Paella in the Plaza Mayor, it probably came out of a box!  ask for  Paella Casera (made in house).

  3. Consider Avila, a small city not far from Madrid - and for smaller villages, the mountainous area around Gredos.

  4. I have made I similar trip. I recommend you get a book called "The Companion Guide to Madrid and Central Spain" by Alastair Boyd. This book has very detailed information on "excursions" around Madrid. http://www.companionguides.com/titlepgs/...

I have stayed in hostels, Hotels and Paradors (national Hotel). Hostels can be very clean, they just don't have many amenities. They can be a very good deal -- around $50 or so a night. Hotels go from one star to five stars, the one stars can be very reasonable and are fine. Paradors are more $150 - $200 but are very unique and you should stay in a least one.

This website has great info (the book is worth getting also.

There are a couple of great Paradors near Madrid that I stayed at. They are not outrageously expensive.

The Parador at  Alarcon is in an extremely romantic setting -- A 13th Century Castle, only a few rooms. Great for a Honeymoon.

Also, the Parador at Siguenza is a very Big Castle in a very nice little Village.

The Posada de San Jose in Cuenca is a great little place in one of the "Hanging Houses" and is very reasonable.

http://www.spain.info/  This is the official website of Spain and  you can get a lot of info there.
