  1. Zoysia stays brown longer in the spring and will spread in very slowly when you start from plugs.  It will be years before you ever get a full lawn.  Another problem with it is the grass blades are rough so you won't have that nice soft lawn that you an walk barefoot on.

I'd go with Bermuda, it does need a little extra fertilizer, but it has advantages over zoysia.

  2. I would recommend Zoysa, it is a high heat, drought tolorant grass that requires very little maintenance.  You can buy either seed or plugs, I recommend plugs.

  3. I have to go with Bermuda, too.  That's what I planted in my backyard this summer.  It takes about three weeks to germinate but once up, wow, it's a fine-bladed grass with a soft touch...as long as you keep it trimmed short.  The dogs love it, too and the grass seems to take the abuse.

Zoysia is also a good choice, but because I have a Bermuda lawn, will of course favor Bermuda.  Why not contact your state extension office for local advice?  Below is the link to get started.  The Aggie pdf files has a whole section for your beautiful Texas lawn.

  4. i agree with rocket man. for a general grass now every yard is different i am in the hot south but my yard is mostly shady and i have really good soil so i use the rye grass a lot it helps with erosion but in most areas in the south its to hot. and turf with the top soil is good if you don'tt have good quality soil ..good luck and have fun..
