  1. That all depends on your surround sound setup.  First of all, your laptop probably doesn't support surround sound (5.1) output.  In that case, your receiver must have the ability to "guess" at how it should be made into surround.  Most receivers have Dolby ProLogic.  If you enable this, your laptop sound should come out of all five speakers and the sub.  If you don't, you will only get sound from the left and right speakers and the sub.

You will need an adapter in order to hook up your laptop to the receiver.  I'm assuming your receiver has an open input and your laptop has a 1/8" line out (headphone out will work, but be careful about turning it up too high).  Visit your local electronics store and purchase a stereo (balanced) 1/8" to Stereo RCA adapter.  It usually comes in the form of a cable.

Use this to hook up your laptop to your receiver.

Select the appropriate input on your receiver and play your music on your laptop.  You should be hearing your music!

Remember to look into the ProLogic feature to get "surround sound" from your laptop.

    -Enjoy!
