I want to play the ukulele...?

Question

i hear its quite easy to teach yourself, but i dont know what kind i am supposed to get. someone who actually knows about this will you please help me!

Check http://ukulelehunt.com/ for all kinds of info on ukuleles.  Go to the beginner section to get excellent advice.  You may get confused along the way so I'll offer the following.  http://www.musiciansfriend.com/navigatio... I encourage all beginers to start with a Lanikai concert LU-21C if you have small hands.  If you have long fingers you may want the LU-21T.  Both are a good quality nato wood ukulele with a really nice sound that won't cost you a fortune.  I know b/c I have the C and my friend has the T.  There are better ones out there but they'll cost you more money.  Yes, Kamaka, Pony, Koaloha, etc.  Look at http://www.ukes.com/links.html and you'll get see others.  Remember tho', just because it's expensive, or shiny, doesn't mean it's the ukulele for you.  You're not buying shoes!  Some old ugly ukuleles sound beautiful.

Get yourself a good chromatic tuner.  I suggest a Cherub.  Ebay item  #250281926437.  Again, good and won't cost you a fortune.  Here's an on site tuner http://www.fleamarketmusic.com/ as well as a wealth of ukulele info.

A few other pieces of advice:

Whatever ukulele you choose to buy, be sure it has geared tuners...like those you see on a guitar.  Much easier to tune than friction tuners for a beginner.

Check http://www.ukuleleclubs.com/ for a club near you.  Lot's of knowledge and fun playing with others.  Also, they may know where you can take lessons.  Altho' the ukulele is easy to learn there's nothing wrong with lessons.

For brand, Kamaka is the best. Kanile'a is also a good maker of ukuleles. Both are expensive, but they're worth the money. I suggest you buy one that has a finish (shiny), since that indicates that the wood is protected and won't come apart. You may want to buy a concert ukulele as well.

But try out those brands of ukuleles and their concert ones, that's the only way you'll know what to buy for sure. A music store employee should help you out as well, if you need it. At the music store there should be ukulele chord books too. Pick one up.
