I want to play volleyball in college?

I'm going to be a sophomore this year and it'll be my second year on my high school's varsity team (I played as a freshman too). I'm an OH but I'm only 5'4". I can jump really high though so in high school volleyball my height doesn't affect my blocking and hitting. In college though will I be at a disadvantage because I'm short? If I can still jump high and block and do all the other skills will my height matter?

  1. well i don't know because you are only 5 4 and i don't think you'll be growing anymore. i don't think  height really does matter in volleyball but it depends if your coach in college. but sounds in your article it sounds like your good if you can spike and serve very well. i think you'll make a college team. keep up your fantastic work!

  2. If you want to play in college and you are of a shorter height I'd suggest you go out and send letters to colleges.  Send tons of them, the more you send the higher chance you'll have to play in college.  That's exactly what I did and in the end had about 7 colleges trying to get me, it was an awesome experience and I always suggest this method to people.

I actually go to a college that looks at the player's ability and potential rather than their physical height.  You should send my college a letter, I'm a senior this year so I won't be around much longer, but my coach is AMAZING and I'm sure he'd love to talk to you.  I go to Taylor University Fort Wayne.  I've attached a link to the recruiting form that you can fill out if you're interested.

And like I said, make the contacts, go for as many colleges as you can and let them fight over you.  Visit their schools and go for the one that just feels right to you.  =)  Have a great couple of years in High School and I hope you get the chance to play in college.  It's a great experience.  And it's really never to early to start contacting schools.  It gives you time to find the right college and it gives them lots of time to find you scholarships. =D

  3. Absolutely  your height will matter but that doesn't mean you can't make a college team.  Try and play some Jr's next season to get more experience.

  4. Your height will matter for some schools.  There are schools out there that will see 5'4" and outside hitter and not look at you.  I am sorry, but that is the way some of them think.  However, smart coaches will look at you first and then decide.  (I heard a coach say that they will not look at anyone under 6' for a front row player.)  You will be able to find a college and a scholarship at your height and position.  You will just have to keep working hard.  You may not get into a top D1 school, but there are over 300 D1 schools and many more at the D2 and D3 level as well as NAIA and junior college levels as well.  If you work hard, your height will not be a problem.  (I have a friend about your height that went to a D2 school as the outside hitter and they only won the national championship.  That coach did not tell her that she was too short.  And she never thought that she was too short.)
