I will check for the user-agent string if the connection is made from Google. What user-agent string does Google use? How will I determine if it is coming from Google so I can display my special pages to Google?

Will I determine by user-agent, or google IP address? I know google uses an IP number which starts like 66.49.x.x

which determination is better? from IP or user-agent?

thanks!

  1. Just a warning - this will get your site banned from google.  They *will* detect it via QA checks from seemingly unassociated/undetectable visitors.

Anyhow, google bots are on many different subnets, based on the datacenter that they are coming from.  So the 66.49.x series is coming out of one datacenter, but there are many more.

The useragent string looks like this: Googlebot/2.1; +http://www.google.com/bot.html

Good luck.  Remember, don't try to fool google with pages that aren't displayed otherwise, or you will be in a world of hurt.

  2. I think this is called cloaking and you probably shouldnt do it as google can penalize you for it.  If you want to get indexed by google correctly, use their Site Map creator in the Google Webmaster Tools.
