You let your agent know in advance, give him the information about the car you are buying, and get it in advance, or you leave it sit after buying it until you can get it insured.  

Most agents list their home phone number in the book or on their card.

Well you can buy the car but just don't drive it home on the same day.  Call your insurance agent the very next day to get the new policy setup.  It should be effective immediately, if not, within 24 hours.  You can't get the new insurance unless you have the VIN number anyway.

If you have an insured car now, your coverage will extend to the new one.  Usually for up to 30 days

if you already have insurance on another vehicle then it will transfer over for about 14 days, if not then you will have to buy insurance at the dealership although not recommended since it will cost more.
