Hate to break it to you, but you have to go with whatever company services your area. The major players are Verizon, AT&T, Lucent, and Pac Bell (or Bell Atlantic on the east coast). If you are lucky, your area will be serviced by at least two or more companies. Otherwise, there may only be one company that services your area and that's the one you'll have to use.

If you have broad band access from your cable company see if they offer VOIP. Voice over internet protocal. it's usually much cheaper and you can adjust your settings. if they dont there are other VOIP services you can get that end up being super cheap. Especially if you don't need 911 service. I got a "teen" number out our house that works off our Broadband service thats gives me all US and Canada for like $60. a year. international depends on where you are calling. But some even allow you to buy a phone number in other countries which could save you even more if you call that country a lot.
