I want to put shells in my fishes tank

i want to put shells and a few marbles in my fishes tank to make it seem a bit more homey but i need to wash them first what can i wash them with is it safe to wash them with soap???????

Shells that originate in salt water should NOT be put in freshwater tanks.

As for washing, you can wash them with bleach. Yes bleach.

Only you must allow the items  to air dry overnight until you no longer smell the chlorine.

It's better if you just drop them in. You don't have to use soap. It's not safe for the water.

Wash the shells with detergent and hot water (there maybe germs in it)

Then rinse well with cold water ... until all are clean.

You need to purchase shells from the pet store...shells you have collected on the beach can kill your fish, as could soap...I am serious...if you value your fish, you will take my advice.

If you don't want to go all the way down to the pet store, call them and ask.  They will explain it to you...they don't want your fish to die any more than you do.

you shouldn't add shells unless your ph level in low or nutral shells will raise the ph level in your tank

as far as cleaning wash with just hot water if the shell is like a snail shell boil for 5 minutes

do not use soap or chemicals to clean them

i have shells in my aquariums, dont use soap, but use water and rinse them really good

Soap is toxic to fish. So just use warm water with a sponge if you want. If it's very dirty. If you use soap ( and i don't recommend it.) make sure all the soap is washed out. By repeatinly rinsing it over and over again. Like 5 times. BY rubbing away any soap with your finger.
