Well through out a year you get 3 to 5 five inquires which should not hurt your credit. Depending on what you have on your credit it should not hurt you. But if you are trying to build up your credit then I will suggest a secured card also easy way will be have some one add you to there credit card as authorized user make sure that card is in good standing and have some time on it.

Usually you need at least 1 year to build some credit before you start applying for new offers. It sounds like you waited a year, then applied in January. The denial in January will have a slightly negative impact on your credit score (because of the credit inquiry), but only cost you 3-4 points, which isn't a big deal.

Since it's been about 6 months since your last attempt, I think it would be OK to try again. You're best bet would be to apply for a credit card which offers several options based upon your credit history. This way, you only apply once - but still recieve an approval.
