I want to recycle left-over architectural shingles on walking paths in my vegetable garden. Are they toxic?

  1. I don't know about toxic, but they are made with petroleum products.


  2. That depends on what kind of shingles you're talking about.  Terra cotta would be okay.  But please do not use asphalt shingles.  It doesn't matter if they're brand new-never been used, they still contain toxins which will leach into the ground.  

    If you have leftover shingles you can use them to roof a playhouse or dog house.  There are also companies which recycle asphalt shingles into road surfacing material.  

    For your garden path I strongly recommend using materials designed for that purpose.  Your plants will thank you.  :)
