I want to refinish my jet ski hull. What is the best way to do this?

I am thinking that the best way is an epoxy finish but I have no idea what product to buy and the process of doing it. (Do I need to fill scratches with marine putty and sand? etc.) Looking for input. Thanks.

  1. poo on it then smear it in

  2. The best way is to fill the scratches, sand it and spray a new layer of gelcote.

You can also try first to get a gelcote repair kit, sand only in the scratches (not around), mix the gel cote with pigment to get the right color, fill the sanded and de-greased scratches, then wet sand 800 grid and buff/polish the hull of the ski with marine rub compound (3m).

  3. Depends on the finish you want to get...

For a tough finish use epoxy with a 200gm sheath which will obliterate all imperfections add strenght but also a little weight, you'll also have to paint it with a two part polyeurathane as epoxy unless specified is not UV tolerant so it needs protection from sunlight.

For a smart professional finish if the sub-laminate is sound, I'd just flatten back the existing Gel-coat spray with a polyester high build primer flatten and finish with a sprayable polyester Flow-coat to the colour of your choice.

The latter is easier, takes less skill and is less labour intensive.
