  1. if you look up IL's DMV page, it will have a list of fees so you can find out exactly how much you will be paying.

when I moved from PA to NJ, i had to transfer my license, which cost about 20 bucks, then get new plates, registration, and transfer the title, which cost a total of 120 dollars.  Then, I had to get a new inspection, but inspections are free in NJ.  so it didn't cost me anything, but keep that cost in mind when trying to budget money for this.

I just went to the NJ DMV (or MVC as it is called here)  and they did everything for me.... it took about 30 minutes, but there were barely any lines.  The DMV page will also tell you what all you need to bring (title, proof of insurance, ID, etc)

  2. One important question apply here...  Did you ever register the vehicle in NY?  If yes, then the cost are known but if not (is what I assuming): NYS Sales tax should have been paid. If you bought that car from a dealer... I assume not so:

The Cost for an avg. 4dr sedan vehicle to be registered and titled in NYS, is $45 for the title, $20-40 for the plates and about $37.50 to $60 per year for registration (depends on weight, doors and passanger capacity). So about $100-$150 plus sales tax. The SALES TAX is determined by bill of sale amount and tax rate in the county in which the vehicle reg is addressed (not where you live... if that is different).

I think sales tax is only paid ONCE, no matter how many times or states you register it in, but each state has slightly differeny DMV rules and regulations.

All and all----> expect to pay very similar costs for Reg. Tax Title & Plates in IL.
