However, I have some stuff that I don't want to lose.

Such as Itunes songs, certain programs (some of which i installed using CD's I don't have anymore). What can I do to preserve all of my data, but still install the operating system

  1. If you want to reinstall the OS to repair it, you can try the repair utility on the Windows CD, That usually will not format the HDD first, However, there are no guarantees that you will not lose some data unless you backup critical files...

I suggest you backup your iTunes songs, or certain programs to another drive, say a USB mass storage device or burn them to a DVD first, then format the hard drive and re-install.

Backing up music is easy, the programs are a little harder.  You will need some back-up software.  I suggest Macrium Reflect Free Edition 4.2 build 2020.  You can get it from Download.com here.   http://www.download.com/Macrium-Reflect-...

  2. get a external hd and back up your important stuff

  3. write DVDs

    use USB drive

    use external HARD disks

ne of these to save data

    clean install after that
