  1. Not knowing at all where you are, if you have access to a major home improvement store they can get you started, even with just measurements. They can advise in a materials list and costs.

    Studding lumber

    wall materials

    insulation materials

    exterior siding materials

    hardware needed

    Interior/Exterior "finish" materials

    Tools, certainly

Some research in the how to

They usually have pamphlets/brochures showing procedures.

If you need no electrical or plumbing installations, what your doing is similar to what takes place in originally framing a house. Your filling in, essentially, and likely will need permits to do the work. At the very least checking with local code/zoning enforcement agencies should be the first step, before any purchasing. You may also want to check with your homeowners insurance company.

  3. Start by measuring the opening you will need to create a new wall for. Include the framing of the garage door, it will look tacky from the outside if you don't remove it. Get material you'll need to erect a stud wall in place of the door, 2x4's, nails, drywall, insulation. Look at the rest of your garage, are the walls finished or just the studs? may need to verify you have insulation in these walls too. You will also have to decide how you plan to ventilate the room, maybe a window A/C or will you try to extend a section of your home's HVAC system? You will also need to get whatever the exterior of your house is covered in too go over the outside surface, along with a vapor barrier. You will probably want to do something with the floor too. Check to see if you have a lot of oil spills on the floor. You may need to do some remediation on that before you start with the walls.

As you can see, it really is a pretty big project. The good thing is you aren't exposing the rest of the house to possible damage during construction, so you can take your time in completing it.

  4. The most important thing is to have a professional remove the garage springs, if it's the type that are coiled above the door.  They are under tremendous force and can cause injury if you don't know how to remove them.

Besides that, you will need to get a permit from the building department, or else one of your nosy neighbors will call and turn you in.

After you get your permit, you'll start by framing in the hole where the door was with a 2x4 wall.  start by measuring the opening and building a wall on the floor, with the studs 16" on center, then standing it up and placing it in the opening.  You'll need to do something to the outside of it, to make it match the rest of your house, then add any electrical that you might want on there.  Then you'll need to call for an inspection before you drywall it.  Then put up some insulation and drywall and mud the joints and s***w holes.  After you are done, call for a final inspection.  That way you'll be legal and won't have to worry when you go and sell the place that the garage conversion was done without the required permits.

This is just a "crash course" on what needs to be done.  You might want to check with one of your friends who might be more knowledgeable in this area, and see if they'll be able to help you out.

    Have fun!!!
