  1. I doubt any U.S. rental companies will rent you a car to drive into Tijuana...and it would be extremely unwise.

  2. I drive a rental car into Baja quite frequently (just came back last week as a matter of fact), and it's no problem at all.  Coming back across the border, I have never been asked to show the papers for the rental or anything of the sort.  And, obviously, they only inspect your vehicle if they have reason to believe that you are carrying something illegal (e.g., if one of the drug dogs points at you or something.)

Be aware that while many of the San Diego rental car companies do allow their cars into Mexico (down to approximately Ensenada), you have to purchase Mexican insurance from them when you rent the car.  It usually runs from $25 to $30 per day.  However, not all companies let their cars go in, so make sure to check on that when you make the reservation.  The companies that I have rented from (and thus am sure allow their cars into Mexico) are Dollar, Fox, and Enterprise.

I've never had a problem driving anywhere in Mexico. Driving is a bit more aggressive, but it's really not that bad.  On the other hand, if you're just going to Tijuana, you probably don't really need a car at all because it is right across the border.  You can walk from San Ysidro and then take a cab wherever you want to go...taxis are pretty cheap there.

Finally, you don't need any kind of import license when you're only driving in the areas close to the border (generally 100 miles south of the border), so you don't need to worry about that to drive to Tijuana.

  3. My family and I have driven to Mexico twice. You will need permission from the car company if rented in the US and you will  have to have all the documents on hand when you return. You will also need to return your temporary import permit when returning otherwise you will either be charged a fee on your credit card for what the import is worth or you will never be allowed to enter the country by car again. Check with your local consulate for current rules and regulations as they change frequently and I have not been over the border in 3 years now though I intend on going again soon!

    P.S.

The border towns are not nearly as nice as some of the inland towns. There is also less crime. We take the less traveled roads too, the only time we used the Pan American Highway we got robbed by the Police!

  4. No clue, but last time I was in Tijuana someone tried to sell me their baby.

  5. I would not recommend it, it's better if you leave the car in the US side (there are some Parking lots specially for that at cheap price) and take a taxi to the Revolucion Street, There's NOT MUCH to see in Tijuana, and There are a lot of Corrupted Cops out there.

But if you do, You won't have any problem coming back. through the Checkpoint, just don't bring any firecrackers.

  6. when you rent a car to take in to  mexico(tijuana) you need insurance on it. it does not matter that it is a rental car they will find out and you  will be fined. they run the plates on each car that arrives at tijuana, they usually offer the temp insurance through youre rental car place or right before you get to the border there are a couple of shopping centers.

  7. Once you cross into Mexico you break your contractual agreement with the rental car agency. So you would be responsible to pay for the car in case it gets stolen or the border patrol agents suspect you are carrying drugs. They can take out all the seats and carpeting and they wont put it back.
