  1. The primer that you would use would be specific to the paint you're applying overtop of the existing substrate, as well as specific to the substrate.

The mere fact that you are asking this question means that you should not attempt gelcoat; please leave this to the professionals.

I'd recommend using an Interlux product, as they are fairly easy to come by, easy to use, and not horribly expensive.

For example, Interlux Brightside is a one-part polyurethane that can be sprayed or brushed. Go on www.yachtpaints.com and it will show you the primers that will work with this finish. Of course, if you're going over existing gelcoat, you'll want to prepare the surface properly by dewaxing, sanding, and cleaning in order for your finish to properly adhere.

Most finishes can be applied above 60-deg F. As long as you're above that in CA, you'll be ok. Otherwise the paint will not dry, will orange-peel, and collect contaminants.

  2. go to a fiberglass shop and get colored fiberglass resin.  You mix it with catalyst and it goes on just like paint.  Your dealer will have all of the instructions.  There are paints you can use, but the results are not as good.

  3. Once you settle on product, the secret to a good paint job is meticulous prep work.  The tendency is to rush to see the finished product, but to do your best, several passes with fairing materials and primers and thorough sanding will give you a result to be proud of.
