  1. I would recommend signing up for a marathon clinic - they will teach you and help you train for your first marathon.  Don't have a goal time for your first marathon.  Just train to finish it...upright and smiling.

Keep a journal so you can record your progress and mileage.  Get good running shoes from a specialty running store (they will recommend whats best for your foot type, gait, form, pronation, etc.)

A good book to read and training is RUNNING: FROM START TO FINISH by John Stanton  There is a good walk/run program for beginners and is a successful program.

Hydrate well and eat a well balanced diet, with plenty of rest is a good start too.

Good luck, run happy and train smart:)

  2. I would recommend to first build a base of regular running 3 days a week 2 to 4 miles for 3 months before starting a formal program. Go at a pace where you can talk comfortable using walk breaks when needed. By the end of the 3 months you should be able to run with out stopping. From then you can pick from many beginner programs that are available online. Here is one from runners world. http://www.runnersworld.com/article/0,71...

  3. You should do pleanty of training to prepare for the marathon, dont run with no training as so many people have done this and got very serious injurys as a result, work out each evening or when you have free time, eat lots of wholegrain and protien foods with lots of water

  4. Here is an article I wrote after running three marathons and inspiring and helping 7 other people run their first.   It covers everything you need to know about running your first marathon, with links to lots of great articles, videos, training schedules, etc.
