I want to sand my wood floorboards but we've noticed a concrete slab where the fireplace once was?

We are planning on having our floorboards sanded (we are hiring a company to do it) but after we lifted up the carpet we noticed there is a concrete slab where there used to be a firepace.

How easy is this to remove? Or more importantly, how costly?

  1. just leave it and incorporate it as a feature

  2. Drop the depth by the thickness of the floor board , level off with new cement , and then cover with simalar boards stuck down with construction adhesive , no more than a days labour

  3. be careful, there might be a body underneath it - havent you seen brookside?

  4. it would`nt take much it take out,but evan if you put boards back ,you will still see,you cant mach it up,me id leave it and put a rug there

  5. it is just the cement bed where the old hearth has been.. it can be broken out to a level below floor.. then fit similar boards to surrounding floor before sanding complete area..

    1 days work

If you get stuck let me know..

  6. It is possibly not concrete but only a mortar bed that was used to fix a hearth. If this is the case then  it will break up quite easily. if you wish to make the area good then consider lifting boards from another part of the room that is less conspicuous (from an alcove or from the corner where the TV will be positioned) For the area that you have robed try matching the floorboards from a reclamation yard or from another room in the house that has a floor covering over it. The final result will depend upon how much time,  effort (or money if you are paying a tradesman to do the job) that you wish to throw at it.
