  1. google it.. youll be amazed what you can find for free...

genealogy sites usually charge, and they point you to google!

  2. I've heard really good things about ancestry.com. Here are what other people think:

    http://www.viewpoints.com/Ancestry-com-r...

    Good luck!!

  3. Well sign yourself up to Genes Reunited for a start, it's best not to put your own name on your tree or other living family members, but you can start a tree for free with any ancestors' names you know and then you are cross matched and any distant cousins who are also researching your family names can get in touch.  You can also search, but I think you pay a subscription of about £9 a year to be able to make your own contacts.  A second cousin who had traced some of the family history quite extensively and who had been looking for my branch of the family for about two years contacted me via this site and we were both thrilled to be able to fill in the missing links.

Ancestry.co.uk I think has a subscription of about £90 a year but you get all the Census 1841 -1901 plus Birth Marriage and Death Indexes.  There is the free UK BMD site which also has some records, and of course the 1881 Census is free from the Mormons, www.familysearch.org I think.

It is also worth seeing if there are any family or local history societies for the area that your father came from, some of them put data online for free, most don't, but they usually have a list of people who are researching the same names.

  4. Try this

    http://www.ancestry.co.uk/default.aspx

  5. Use ancestry if you want to pay.

Free resources such as the ones below have gaps in coverage so you may not find the info straight away.

    http://www.freebmd.org.uk/

    http://freecen.rootsweb.com/

The next thing you need to do is to get any marriage certificates because they give details of parents.
