  1. While "telephone books" were an object of the 1920s, there were indeed "City Directories" published all the way back to the 1870s. Check at your library and find out if they can get it for you on film. Otherwise, the San Francisco Public Library, many large research libraries (Newberry in Chicago, Allen County IN, Burton Collection in Detroit) have them on film, and your official State Library probably either has the film or can get it for you. If you're in California, check to see if it's available through Interlibrary loan. Also check with the LDS to see if they can get it for you. That way you can pick up the thousands of people who didn't have a telephone for another 20 years.

Here is a list of some of the directories that are available. Some are online, others are lookups.

Are you certain that they remained IN SF?

  3. You might want to contact a historical society of San Francisco, i'm not sure if they had telephone books back then, i know that phone were in use, but not too sure if they were printing phone books yet.

  4. If you have a State Library they have lots of records on microfilm.  If you don't live nearby, you can do an interloan library loan where they will send the microfilm to your local library on loan.

Or you can visit the nearest LDS Church.  They also have many records on microfilm.  They can order the microfilm (if there is one for this) for about $3.50 per 2 weeks.
