Question:

I want to sell my car on my own and I have a transferrable extended warranty...?

My car is a 2005 Ford Focus SE, I have an extended warranty on it. It has only 35,500 miles, so is almost out of factory warranty. It is in good condition (to excellent) Nothing wrong with it, in fact it is a really great car! I am moving into Chicago so I want to sell it because it will definitely get banged up on the street, and I don't need a car there. I looked on Kelly Blue Book and it says that in this condition it could go for $10,500...BUT I have a transferable extended warranty...should I throw it in (or charge for it) and what should I reasonably expect to get for this car?

  1. Only 5% of the car's for sale are in "excellent" condition, so keep that in mind. A 3-yr old car is not in "excellent" condition by KBB's standards. Your car would probably fall under "good" condition.

Don't charge extra for it, but do indeed use it as incentive to purchase ("comes with extended warranty through _____ miles!" or something like that). If you want to add a little to the price, you can, but only a few hundred dollars.

And, don't trust KBB as gospel for cars in your area. Like the poster above me said, go to Autotrader, and look up what 3-yr old Focus' are selling for in your area with similar miles/specifications. This will give you a better idea of what to charge.

  2. Since no one is answering... I just looked up a Focus ZX3 (you didn't say 3,4 or 5-door) on KBB.com, and "good" condition is about $9700.  The warranty might be worth another $500.  So you can ask between $10,000 and $10,500, with the warranty included.

Check for similar cars on autotrader.com to see what others are asking.  Good luck.
