Question:

I want to sell my car?

I have a 2002 Toyota Rav4 with all available options that I bought *outright* from my aunt (the only previous owner) a few years ago. It's in fantastic shape and has new wheels, spark plugs, brake pads, filters, battery, etc. About 103,000 miles on it and it gets over 30 miles/gallon on the highway.

Anyway, I want to sell it privately, because the trade-in value at a dealership is only 9,500. According to various websites, it should sell for a little over 10,000. (10,150-10,222 to be exact.) Any advice on how to go about it as cheaply and safely as possible? Where should I advertise, etc?

  1. i am sorry to burst your bubble but that car doesnt get 30 mpg i own the same car and do all the maintence when scheduled if not before and i only get 24-25 on the highway.

  2. Wow, if you could get $9500 for it you should seriously consider it. SUV's are depreciating by the day, and selling privately is sometimes a hassle. I recently sold my SUV and it took me 4 months. I tried 3 or 4 dealerships who offered me between $5-$7K for it (if I bought one of their cars, that is). I listed on autotrader, craigslist (free), local paper and supermarket flyers. I ended up selling it privately for $8500. It was an '04 Santa Fe with 82K miles on it.

  3. no way anyone will give you or the dealer more than $8k for that car.

AND NO WAY IN H E L L  YOU GET OVER 30MPG IN THAT THING!! That is a FAT LIE!  A little car like a civic and get very low 30's not any suv!

  4. use craigslist..its free..and alot alot of people look at it..

the dealer will give you thousands less than its worth..if they give you the max, they will rip you off on the car you want to buy..i suggest selling it yourself!

  5. (1) clean the car up a little

    (2) don't bother fixing anything

    (3) put an ad somewhere (craigslist.com = free)

    (4) show the cars  few times

    (5) get your title ready

    (6) negotiate the price

    (7) reach a deal

    (8) TAKE CASH or Bank Check ONLY

    (9) sign over the title

    (10) make out a bill of sale - write "AS-IS" in the BOS

    (11) take off your license plates (most states)

    (12) be happy

if you decide to take bank check, make sure you go to the bank with the buyer and WATCH HIM buy the check.  This way you know it is NOT printed up on home printer.

    Good Luck...

  6. For 600 to 700 dollars, i would just go with the dealership. This way you don't have any of the hassle of showing the car and other annoying things that come with selling a car privately.

    Hope this helps, Matt

  7. Personally I thing the dealer was being GENEROUS on the trade in value! Realistically that car is only worth about $6500 with those miles!

Take a LOOK at KBB! LOADED 4X4 RAV-4 AUTO

  8. man f*****k wat the other guy said try selling on autotrader, put out flyers or just put a for sale sign in your window and park it on a busy street or drive it around.

  9. Those websites just give a "guestimate" as to what you should ask for it. The vehicle is only worth what someone is willing to pay for it. And with gas prices, you may sit on this vehicle for a bit. If the dealer is saying 9500 and the "various" places are just over that......then you may be safer letting it go for what the dealer says.

That being said, try craigslist or your local newspaper.
