  1. Unless there is a reason you need to send them to a school - so that you can work while they are in school, for example - simply go online to starfall and they can learn to read and write in the privacy of your home and will enjoy doing that as well as learning.  Everyone I have given this link to has thanked me because of the excellent benefits their child has gained from going there.

  2. You need to call the schools in that area, both public and private.  The current trend in education is toward providing Pre-K as part of the school system.  If it is available in your area, go visit the classes to choose one for your child.  They are often excellent classes.  Don't limit yourself to just private schools.  You might be excluding an outstanding teacher who could give your child an exceptional experience to start his educational career.  Check into other preschool classes also.  Find out what license the school has, what credentials the teachers have, and ask what sort of schedule the children follow.  Make sure the schedule includes both structured and unstructured activities, and the children have time to play outside.  Visit the schools that sound interesting and observe a class in progress.  Watch for cleanliness and teacher/child interaction.  The children should be engaged and active and happy.  Trust your intuition, and pass on any setting that you are not comfortable with.  Remember that children this age learn best through active, hands-on activities.  Pass on any setting that has a lot of seat work and too much structured instructional time.
