to be on a level setting with other kids?

This is for a part of my town that is significantly below the poverty line and have the least sucessful kids in terms of sat's and gcse's.

I was thinking of donating money via the form of school uniforms and books that can be a financial burden... am i on the right tracks here?

  1. you are on track however the needs of the under privileged schools can be staggering I would suggest getting sponsors and other charity's to help you and the main thing I believe is Laptops or desktop computers they make learning enjoyable and give those students a confidence that they are on the same levels as other students or you can arrange funding so those schools can go to exhibits, museums, zoos etc like the wealthier communities.

  2. What you are trying to do is very worthy and I'm sure that your help would be appreciated.

However, may I suggest that you go and ask them what they need - you might be surprised. You might find, for example, that it isn't just material things that are lacking but a place where the kids can study.

What I am saying is that it is a huge social problem that governments and councils have been trying to sort out for years. That is not to say that there is nothing we can do, because there is plenty we can do to help.

So, as I mentioned, have a word with the people who run youth groups and the like - they will help you decide how you can help. If you don't know where these people are just go to a Citizens Advice Bureau where you will find a fund of information and advice.

  3. I think you're on the right track, but I would talk to the schools you are thinking to help and see if there is something that they are in dire need of more than anything else, this way you are sure to give them exactly what they really need, or what they need most.  Sure, uniforms and books seem like an obvious choice, and probably are a need, but they may already have a source for those, while there is something else they need that they don't have a source for, like SAT tutors.  There may be something specific to the city you're in that someone in another city may not pick up on, the school will be able to tell you about that, and will be glad to.

  4. shoes, paper, pencils, musical instruments, sports uniforms, bags, lunch money, schools Field trip money, glasses,...

i think that this is a great idea.
