I want to start singing, I would like to be as good as helena bonham carter in Sweeney todd before the summer ends for my new choir class. Is there anyway I can learn how to sing that way with out spending any money?

  1. Just start yelling, and forget nuance, talent, or, for that matter, pitch.

    OH RIGHT! I almost forgot.

    Marry the Director.

    It helps in casting.

  2. Why do you want to sing like HBC?  She (just) got away with the role on film, but she'd never be able to perform it on stage.  Get hold of the DVD of the original Broadway production of Sweeney Todd with Angela Lansbury as Mrs Lovett, or the Sweeney Todd in Concert DVD with Patti LuPone as Mrs Lovett - both are far, far superior to HBC.  Anyway, to answer your question, the only way to improve your singing without spending any money is to practice.  Do you have a piano, or access to one?  Sing scales and arpeggios every day, using the piano to keep yourself in tune; get to know your voice and what it can do.  Record yourself singing and listen to it (you will sound different to what you thought) and see if you can hear what you need to improve on.  But don't aspire to Helena Bonham Carter because she's an actor who sings OK, not an actor who sings really well.

  3. Practice.  I never took lessons, and I sing pretty well.
