Question:

I want to start a marshal art but i don't know which 1 i could do because of the accident?

Hey

When i was 5 i got ran over by a car. I'm now 13 but i have perthese disease in my hips - can't run far and cant do kicks...

I'm really wanting to do a marshal art but i heard there is so many, i have no idea which one would be good for me, any ideas?

  1. Aikido doesn't involve kicks, tends not to be physically strenuous, and often focuses on developing internal health


  2. I really enjoyed Tai Kwon Doe, it was a great experience. Very fun.

    Karate was fun, but for someone like you in this situation, maybe it's not the best option.

  3. Boxing and wing Chun maybe your best options, they don't have all that many kicks so they may help. You could also try a grappling art, a lot of grappling techniques require use of the hips. Try looking around for martial arts schools near you and tell them about your disabilities.

    In your case I don't think you should be looking for any specific style but rather a school in where the instructors are willing (and able) to modify their curriculum.

    I would avoid styles like Tae Kwon Do witch rely primarily on kicking, I doubt they would be able to work around your condition.

    It also sounds like you may not be able to handle complex footwork or a lot of deep stance work.  If this is the case then I would avoid some of the more exotic styles of Kung Fu (e.g. Praying Mantis Kung Fu).

    My personal recommendation to you is to find a Tracy's Karate Studio, they teach Chinese Kenpo Karate.  There are quite a few of them and you might be able find one within driving distance.  The curriculum is versatile and they offer private lessons so you can work at your own pace.  Also kicking takes a back seat in most of the techniques and is in many cases not necessary to the effectiveness of said techniques.  The only downside is that the forms (katas) get longer the more advanced you get and can be quite the workout for your legs.  But it is my experience that the instructors will work with you and make any modifications in the material that is needed while not sacrificing the benefits.

    If you can't find a Tracy's Karate Studio just ask questions of local studious that interest you.  Explain your condition and if they seem optimistic that you can train AND get something out of it then go for it.

    Other styles you might want to look into:

    Wing Chun

    American Kenpo

    Tai Chi (if you don't care how combative it is)

    Those are the only ones that come immediately to mind, hopefully you'll get more ideas from other answers.

  5. Learn to spell first.  And just because you're bitter about your 'accident', that doesn't mean you should open a school to take out your frustrations...though I'm sure you could really s***w some people out of their money.  This is what instructors and owners do.

  6. Boxing maybe a fantastic option for you. it is mainly based on a few, powerful well timed punches that may not necerssarily involve much leg work.

    it depends if u class boxing as a martial art

    but it is deffinately a good option.

    i do it and its amazing so   have a good look around and gd luck mate

  7. well the first thing that came to mind is boxing. how ever there was a kid who lost his right arm in a car accident and got way down and depressed. his dad took him to judo. sounds stupid but this kid was able to eventually get a legit black belt. yeah he kicked a lot of peoples buts. I wish I could have seen there faces.also an mma legend broke his neck wrestling and the doctors said he'd never be able to walk. now he is one of the full contact fighting biggest names. don't let this stop you from anything you want to do. also aikido might be good. it will probably be tough at first but also try judo
