My little brother was in a play for a theatre group called Mill Mountain about an hour from where we live. I watched his performance and wanted to start acting. But since we live in a VERY small town in Virginia there are no theatre groups or acting classes available and since gas is so high right now my parents won't drive me to Mill Mountain. Any ideas on how I can get started acting?

  1. If your school has a drama club or something join that and audition for school plays. Reach for the stars and don't give up!

  2. Mill Mountain is a wonderful company, so I can understand how seeing your brother in a production could really spark an interest.  Look closely around you, see if there are any small community theatres in the area, closer than Roanoke.  Community theatres are a great way to get a start in the business, it can be fun, and gives you at least a small taste of what you will see as you get older.

Wait for High School.  Most High Schools have a drama program of some type.  Also look into the Governors Schools, I know that the one in Waynesboro has a drama program, and of course if you could find a way to get to the one in the tidewater area (I think Norfolk) you would be exposed to some people who have plenty of professional experience.

More than anything, observe.  Look at the world around you, go to shows (when possible) go to museums, watch films that may be a bit out of the main stream.  A strong artist has a strong grasp of the world around them.

Keep dreaming, you don't have to live in small town Virginia forever.

  3. See if any of your friends' parents or older sisters or whatever had ever had any acting experience.  If you find someone who has ask them for a few tips.  From there, you can practice acting on your own.  Put on skits with your friends, learn a monologue, or audition for a school play.  When it comes to acting, you are your own best teacher.

  4. look in to ProScout. proscout.com its for modeling and acting. its really good i did it and you get to walk in front of top agencies. and if you want to act then you preform a prolouge in front of them

  5. Ask your brother or a friend who's into acting for some help, or try out for your school play. If you make chorus, great! Just because chorus members aren't leads doesn't mean they're not as important as the leads. [You can't put on a show without all the parts!] Listen to everything the director tells the actors. Make sure to try to always relate everything you act to something similar in your life. Like if you were playing a girl who wanted to start playing soccer, but her parents wouldn't let her join the soccer team, you could incorporate how you feel about how your parents won't drive you to mill mountain.

    Hopefully this helps!
