I am homeschooling her because the public school system won't let her attend school because she missed the age requirement date to turn 5 by two days and right now I can not afford a private school. She can already read books and do some math and I was told that if she attend pre-k another year she is going to be very bored in class because she is so advanced I was told this by her pre-K teacher. A private school that she is 1st grade level and that's were I should start her at. But how do I get started?

  1. If you are looking for a great K curriculum. Try http://www.sonlight.com it's alittle pricey but worth every penny!

If you want an inexpensive program check to see if they have a public homeschool program in your state. @ popular programs are k12 and Connections Academy http://takecontrolofyoureducation.blogsp...

    And for general information...try here

  2. At 5 we just bought a few workbooks from Walmart. But if your daughter can read already you might want to start looking into a full curricula. For the best program you need to figure out her learning style. Is she a visual, or auditory learner? Also do you want a Christan or secular program? Do you want to do unit studies? Unschooling? A boxed program? Or a combination of all three?

For us we use Sonlight for everything except Math and Science. You can look at them at www.sonlight.com For math we use Math U See www.mathusee.com and for science we use Apologia www.apologia.com

This is a Christian program that emphasizes history and literature. In Core 1+2 you would be teaching World History. In Core 3+4 we are teaching American History and all the novels she is reading have to do with Am. History. She really enjoys the program.

  3. I was wondering, why you would deprive your children of the socializing that occurs in regular school how do you think they will be better off?

Why not just send them to public school and then help them with their homework to do better?

  4. Check the laws in your state on education requirements and file your Notice of Intent. Check K12.com and Connectionsacademy.com for free online public schools. If you want to homeschool yourself then check books out from your local library. Good luck.

  5. Party, why the crusade against homeschooling?

Some of us prefer to have our child master concepts rather than be passed along with no regard for whether they have learned anything. We prefer our early readers engaged rather than bored and frustrated, having their enthusiasm for learning undone by being asked to do what they already know. we prefer real learning to drilling for tests. We prefer that the history they are taught is accurate and the geography up-to-date.

Also, some of us don't consider social darwinism, materialism, bullying, gender discrimination, herd mentality and having our kids' appearances micromanaged by the school as positive socialization.

  6. I use www.aceministries.com

Since your daughter is advanced, you need to go to the diagnostic testing and place her where she is.

This a curriculum that places the child exactly where they are in each subject.  For example she may be at 1st grade and 6 months in spelling, and at Kindergarten level in science, and so forth.  So that is where your child starts, exactly where they are in each individual subject.

I commend you for homeschooling!   Your little girl is going to be able to go at her own pace and not be held back in the public school.  Good job!
