  1. I think you can get a basic understanding of the art of Aikido by reading a book.

In order to learn Aikido, you'll need to take a class. As someone who just recently started taking Aikido classes, I can assure you there's no other way - there's SO much to it!

But reading never hurts - it's a good place to start, and I checked out a few books so I could learn about its applications prior to signing up for a class.

    good luck!

  2. you can't learn anything without a teacher.

you need a teacher not so much to show you the techniques, but to correct you and fine tune what you are doing.

anyone can "MIMICK" but there are always nuances that make a technique go from bieng utter unworkable c**p, to good.

find a good school that trains with resisting opponents (not ukis that throw themselves) and work it into your budget and go train there. If you can't find a school that trains that way in your area than find one of any style that does.

better to actually learn something than to just go through the motions of it.

  3. ukemi, ukemi, ukemi. find a field of grass. ukemi you can pretty much learn by yourself, if you study some books and videos. a teacher would help, but basically, roll-outs and falls, always slapping the ground. ukemi is an art in itself.

  4. by breaking your wrist a couple of times to learn that you need a teacher

  5. Not all teachers are good teachers , the good teachers teach you what they know while the bad teachers show  you what they know. Even the good teachers need you to learn what they teach by you practicing it. It is only through dedicated practice that your teacher within can help  you  to learn what the teacher without has teched you. Books and videos just show you, they do not teach. They're good for reference, inspiration and learning about it. In short you need a good teacher. But then again if you have the gift to learn from what is shown you like some people do ,then  you can learn the basics that way, you might be able to  develop your own system; because everything after basics is variations being applied to its foundation. remember this, anything is possible and some things are just imposable, let this be you rule of thumb.

  6. youtube or google avoid all steven seagall movies

look for training vids from torrent sites as well

  7. Do not try to learn from a book or video because you might have incorrect form while doing so and might get yourself hurt.

  8. Don't waste your time trying to learn from a book or video. They are strictly for reference. To learn any martial art correctly you must have a knowledgeable instructor. Without one you are only mimicking moves. It is only possible to learn correctly when an instructor observes, explains, and corrects your technique, timing, distance, ...etc.

  9. You can't.

You can learn the theory, or imitate moves which could potentially teach you how to do the technique incorrectly.

It's like learning to drive a car, without actually driving it.
