  1. I have that same question haha but i have been looking online and found that trek and specialized make really nice mountain bikes and some are in the 500-600$ price range the one i am looking at right now is the trek 4300 (the price is not on the trek website they  want you to go to a bike shop to buy it but from what i found online it is around 500$) trek makes really well bult bikes for half decent prices (specialized to) but your best bet would be to go to a bike shop they can help you find just what you need! and also for some added pointers in that price range get a hardtail bike (one without a rear suspension) full suspension bikes are great!! if you got 2 grand to blow on a bike you can find them for 600 bucks but they are gona be pieces of **** and break on you. also stay away from walmart!!! i have had like 5 difrent bikes from there and it might just be how i ride but they all break on me and everyone else i have talked to said the same go to a good bike shop!! they will have nice bikes that wont break!! (excuse my ranting)

  2. shop around at different bike shops, and find a dealer and bike that you are comfortable with. all the major brands offer a lifetime frame warranty, this isn't exclusive to trek! there are a plethora of bikes in your price range, so have fun testing them out! when you're on the trails, no one will look at your Specialized, and say: "gee, you sholuld have got a Trek!" well, perhaps one poster will..

  3. Tour the local bike shops and tell them what you are looking for you can get a nice one for less them $600.

    Look at

    Trek

    Specialized

    Giant

    Raleigh

    Cannondale

    Jamis

    Diamond Back

  4. A Trek 4300 would be good for you, they come in black, and will leave you with about $80 to spare. Treks also come with LIFETIME warranty on all frames, and 1-2 years on parts. If you want durability and longevity, you can't go wrong with a guarantee like that. Trek is also the #1 retail store brand name in America, by the numbers.

The Gary Fisher Wahoo is also worth looking at if you want something with a little wild side to it, some people prefer their frame geometry better than other brands, because Fisher's have you leaning further back with your feet slightly forward.

You would be hard pressed to get a Cannondale mountain bike for under $600 unless it was used, but they are excellent as well. A bit stiffer than other bikes.
