She's 12 years old and she's really into gymnastics and her coach recommended I start homeschooling her so she can concentrate more on gymnastics. But I dont know the first thing about homeschooling and I have to work a lot just to put her through the gymnastics school she's going to. Can you pay someone else to do it for you?

  1. Check out HSLDA.org for rules and regulations.

You might be able to enroll her in a virtual school..

    check out also

    k12.com

    connectionsacademy.com

and search on google for virtual schools.

  2. What you can do will depend a lot on the state that you live in.  Each state has its own laws regarding education (and homeschooling).

Most states will allow you to hire a tutor, though they may not call that "homeschooling."  You should be able to contact your local school district or a local homeschooling organization to find out how this would work in your area.  Or ask the coach if he can refer you to some other parents who have gymnasts who are homeschooled, so that you can network with them and gather information about the possible ways to do this.

Or, since she's 12, you might try homeschooling her yourself.  She's old enough to be pretty independent, to work on her own, and to look things up online or find someone to ask when she does need help.  Especially if she knows it will help her to do better in gymnastics.

In some states, you could even find another homeschooling family and pay them to let your daughter learn with them; that might make things much simpler for you.  (But some states won't allow this form of homeschooling--that's why it is important to find out about your state's laws.)

    Good luck.

  3. Don't do it....

But you can hire a tutor....

    But I don't suggest homeschooling....

    =)

  4. You can hire a tutor to come some days a week and teach her.

  5. You may want to look in to unschooling. See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Unschooling

  6. I have Home schooled my 2 girls while I was working in Bangkok.  I co-teach the girls with my wife, spliting the work load between us.

If you asked me, I felt that Home school did have their advantage and disadvantage, depending on the location, ammenity, child's personality, and the dynamic between child and parent(s).

If in normal situation, home school in City is abit waste of resources for me, when there are good public school that does the job so well.  But in some area, especially in remote rural area, Home shool will be fun.  Lot of outdoor lesson to do practical science, and lesson can be conducted outdoor too!

However, if your child is very active and outgoing, home school will have a problem as inthe class, there is only one/two students, and school only have one or two teaching staff.  My children faced this problem, for they were once Net Ball player in their school, and they enjoy friends.

However, if you have church friends, and I understand you have gym, I guess that will helps.  You have to access this carefully.

How is your child?  Is she obedient?  Are you able to get her to do things without shouting?  Is she able to have self discipline to do thing alone?  If she can, than Home school will be meaningful.  Else, most of the time, you will struggle getting to teach her.

Notice I place the acdamic stuff last?  I use to use Sonlight for English and science.  Bob Jones for reading material, and Singapore Maths and Chinese I got it in Singapore.

Any material will do, I believe.  Most important is, they are able to flow back to mainstream when they are called to.  For my children, they have no problem.

Frankly, I use 3 months to finished one year of maths and science.  My wife took 5 months to cover the Chinese and English material.  Perhaps language learning will take more time.  But by and large, home school kids learn fast.

Now that they are back to main stream school, they too, top their class, because they have learned to do self learning.  I only coach them once a while when they are in trouble.

So, I do see the advantage of Home school.  But I am fearful of doing home school too.  FOr you ahve to prepare the lesson, teach, mark and evulate with your children.  Which took up a lot of time.

What ever decision you made, may the Lord bless you and your family.
