First start with things that you would like to do. What are your interests? What do you have experience with? You don't want to start a business doing something you aren't going to like doing simply because of the money you can make. You need to do something that you enjoy.

Also, how much can you afford to start a business? If you are going to open a store, you will need products/inventory, along with office equipment, insurance, rent for the location, etc.

If you don't have much money to start up a business, then I suggest looking into some sort of online business or mlm network marketing type of company that is already in place and will allow you to own your own business in that you get paid for the work & effort you put into it personally, but you won't have the huge start up costs that are required with a traditional business.

If you choose to go with something already in place, look for something again that you would enjoy doing. If you are not into sales, then don't go for anything that involves selling products. No matter what anyone will try and tell you, if you do not sell the products, you won't be able to make it work.

There are also service type companies that you can look into as well. I am personally with Ameriplan, which offers health care discount plans to people who otherwise can't afford traditional insurance or who may have been denied coverage. I have been with them for 2 years and love it. I tried the whole products side with make up and vitamins and I realized that I hated selling products, especially expensive ones. So something like Ameriplan works best for me.
