I am not a very active person and want to start running. Any tips for beginning runners. What would be a good distance to start off for the first week, then the second, and so on.

  1. if you say your not active start with almost an entire mile, always pace yourself it takes a while to get a rhythm but youl get it after a while, also after the first week don't jump from one mile to two miles do only what you can do, and most of do your best and drink alot of water

  2. I like Bob's answer a lot.  I would also suggest walking to warm up, then jog for a while, then walk.  Fast runners also use this strategy to get going.

Get a decent pair of running shoes.  You don't have to spend a lot of money.  Sports stores have last year's model on sale often.  Your feet, legs, hips, and back will thank you!

  3. You should start with a walk / jog program. You could go to a track or go to the local bike path. Make sure you have good running shoes.

Don't think you have to start with a 1.5 miles. You could get injured. With the other programs you build up strength until you can complete longer distances. Good Luck!

  4. Well star by stretching alot so you don't pull any muscles your first run. Then just start by doing 1 mile, but let yourself stop midway, then just move your distance up about a half mile every 3-4 runs, and let yourself stop if you really have to. After about 3-4 weeks, youll be running 3-4 miles non-stop at a decent pace.

  5. Put on tennis shoes, put on shorts and t-shirt, stretch out and warm up a little bit, and start running.  Its pretty easy to start.

I'd target a mile to a mile and a half for your first run.  Work your way up slowly- add a tenth of a mile on every couple of runs.  I would say when you get yourself up to 3 miles, you want to stop focusing on just increasing distance, and start thinking about speed instead.  You early goal should be to break 10 minute miles, then go for 9 and a half minute miles, etc, until you work your way up to a good speed.  Just take everything in bits and pieces.  But the main thing is to get out there and just start doing it :)

  6. I am not an expert but I think you should start off walking fast for a a couple of miles a day. You can work up to a run if you are comfortable with running. If your out of shape maybe you should do only walking for a couple of weeks first. You should do leg stretches before your walks. You should bring a water bottle with you.You should wear a good pair of walking/running shoes.Just to start running makes me hyperventilate.

  7. start jogging first so you can build your speed up. I find it better to go slow, then you can run for longer. Try about a mile the first time you go. Run in the same place to begin with n run a bit further each day, then you can start proper running. Hope that helps!
