  1. You would do well to start with a walk/run program to ease into running.  Most LTR (Learn to run) are 8 – 10 weeks and take you from walking/running for 20 minutes to running 20 minutes.  Each week the running gets a big longer and the walking decreases.

You can find great LTR programs online from Cool Running, Runners World, Jeff Gallway, Hal higdon, Jeff Daniels and other sites.

  2. I have mild asthma that's bothered by the cold, so now's the time to start. I'm currently up to 2 miles and will be up to 3 by summer's end.

I started in April doing single laps at the high school. I felt like I was going to die after -- I couldn't get enough air. Then I really quickly worked up to 2 laps, then a mile, etc.

The key with me was to do it every day -- otherwise, my body would bounce back to the "lazy" me.

I find that walking does no good if you're trying to improve your asthma conditions. It's just not aerobic enough. I could walk 100 miles. Start with a lap at your local high school track. You'll get stronger.
