  1. I've made several, and the best thing to do first is figure out what pictures you want to put into one, and what the theme will be.  you can have a different theme for each page, or for the whole book.  get the pictures together, then go to Michaels (I'm OCD about that place), and look at the books.  if you want to get a kit, go for it.  it just depends on your creativity.  I've never done a kit, I've always done it on my own.  Walmart also has a lot of stuff that's cheaper (stickers, etc).  think before you do it, and try to get stuff on sale.  it can get expensive, but you'll love the result.

organize the pictures into groups of 2-3 pictures (fits best onto a 12x12 sheet, or 1-2 pictures for an 8x8 sheet)

go to the store, find your book and the pages you want to use.

look at the stickers, stamps (look in the $1 bins first), ribbons, punches, etc.  get an idea of what you want the book to look like.

regular scotch tape is fine for putting the pictures on the paper.  you don't need all the fancy tape, etc.

if you have a Walmart, go there first.  believe me, it'll save you a lot of money, no matter how great Michaels is...

good luck, and remember, you can ALWAYS change things around.  put your pictures on first.

  2. I have been scrapbooking for over 10years. Personally I don't like kits. There is too much stuff in them I don't like or don't use. Your whole scrapbook is the same regardless of what your pictures or theme it is.

Try looking for beginner classes. Archiver's has free ones. Cord Camera has them as does JoAnn fabrics.

Go to your library and check out books on the subject. See if they carry any scrapbook magazines. You should be able to check out old issues.
