  1. Try taking some lessons

    http://www.surfcamps.com/

  2. surf shops never fail. just ask some people

  3. u shuld start with a lesson, find som in your area

try renting foam bords at first

hang out at your local surf store to learn about good spots

watch and learn about riptides, currents, etc, etc

everytime u drive or walk by the ocean think "wave height, current direction, any riptides?, air temp., water temp., wind speed (white caps in the outside start at 13 knots), etc"

once u r familiar u might want to start with an 8' foam board, then move on to either a 6'6" - 7' shortboard, or a 8'- 9' longboard

definetely start with atleast one lesson

    for surf etiquette:

overlook ads, and thers a second page

  4. Take some lessons and start out on a longboard.

  5. its so fun! no question- i get some lessons- and on ur own sometime just freeball it and go! be sure to get a surf board (duh :p)

    good luck

  6. Surfing is an ocean sport, to do it right, you have to be at home in the ocean, with its currents, rips, undertows and sometimes big waves. I don't just mean being good at swimming in a pool, the ocean can be very unforgiving. I have seen lots of really good pool swimmers have to get rescued. You have to learn surf etiquette (so the experienced surfers in the line up don't want to drown you), how to paddle and take off on a wave, and how to ride a wave.

Lessons are usually the best way to start, unless you are an adolescent or young adult with lots of pals who surf who can teach you. Go to a real surf shop. The folks there can hook you up with lessons, and even rent you a board to learn on. Just work on your basics, and after you feel good, think about buying a board, but don't rush into anything.

Some folks have said that skateboarding may help. Well, any balance improving activity can be helpful to improve your surfing. That could be skate, snow, wake or skim boarding, working out on a Indo board, or doing the balance beam. HOWEVER, surfing is nothing like skateboarding. You have to paddle and catch a wave. First, and most important, you have to be at home in the ocean. You need to learn the mechanics of surfing, paddling out, catching a wave and standing up on the surfboard. It is after you have gotten all that down, that your balance becomes important, and if you have good balance (because, perhaps, you skateboard), that will only help you ride better.

Be careful of what you read here on line. There are lots of really well meaning young folks who have neat answers about surfing, but at 55, I tend to classify anyone under 25 as a kid. After I found this site, I figured that I could answer a few questions, and spread the 'good news' of surfing. After you learn to swim and master the ocean, get your REAL advice from a surf shop, where industry professionals earn their rent money selling surfboards.

I have been surfing since 1966, and had a lifetime of fun. take the time and learn the 'right way' and you will have a lifetime of fun too. Good luck

  7. I guess just read John F's answer.   He seems to have it pretty well covered and just pastes it in since this gets asked every day.

  8. First I would recommend getting into shape because surfing uses very specific muscles you may not be using now.

You need to do push-ups and bench presses to build your chest muscles, (pecs), so you can push yourself up to stand.

Next you need to do pull-ups or lat pull-downs to work the muscles along your sides, (lats), that you will use to paddle.

A little running will build your cardio and legs muscles.

Then I would take a couple of lessons to get the basics down.

After that it's just going to take time in the water.

I always recommend that beginners get a longboard, (at least 9' long), as these are the easiest to catch waves with and balance on to stand up.

And finally this site has a great article called 'Learn How to Surf in One Day' that I think is terrific:

Good luck and have fun!!  :-)

  9. ask you local surf shop and they can tell you all the places and stuff.

    Surfings awesomE!

  10. You got to buy a Fun board first , then try practicing in 2-4 foot waves you will learn fast
