I want to start surfing?

But I live in Slidell, Louisiana, and there really isn't a way to be consistant with it. I want to be in the ocean with the warm sun, and beautiful breeze, I want to ride the waves, and have fun. I am 14, and cannot drive anywhere myself. The closest beach is Waveland with murky water and no surf. I really want to, so bad. Every Summer we go to Destin, Florida, but I don't think it's enough time. But what about a wetsuit...a board...lessons, I need to sort things out, and talk to my parents, where do I start sorting things out, and looking at lessons, boards, and wetsuits,,,,I'm thinking Roxy, what about you?

  1. I have a Roxy board!

they're awsome boards and not that expensive either.

you can buy a wetsuit but i dont think you'd need it, i never use a wetsuit because i like getting wet.

tell your parents you want to suggest the next family vacation in hawaii!

  2. I'm thinking you need to wait.

Your parents aren't going to move simply so you can be closer to some waves and there's no need to spend money on a lot of equipment and lessons you wont be able to use. Even lessons will require you to live near adequate swells.

Surf camps last just a few days and would require you to travel. Maybe you can connect with one in Florida while your family is there but you'll still be in the same position you are now.

Get good grades, apply to a good college near a coastal community with better waves and see if you still want to live there when you graduate.

Even if you were old enough to drive, for water safety reasons you should always surf with at least 2 other people. If there's an accident like a shark attack or something, one person stays with the victim and the other person goes for help. Don't rely on people you don't know.

Check http://www.surfline.com to find the best waves near you.

  3. i am 14 too and i live in newportbeach california, i surf everyday, it sucks if you dont live by the beach, but someday you can move by the beach

  4. talk to them about going to a surf camp this summer. so theres a lot of time and that way u get to surf and learn at the same time.lol..  Theylle give u lessons and more info  and stuff. they might have boards for u if u don have one :)

  5. there should be some surf camps within about two hours or less of you, and if you go to one they will start you with a board and a wet suit. if your going to go on your own (which if your just going to purely have a good time and relax it might be a good idea), i would go with a 9'0 board and an ocean-tec wet suit.  any board 8 feet or longer would be a good relaxing board, and any brand is ok although i would recommend a BIC

  6. On your next "VACA"come out to Southern CA, their are all kinds of good beaches ..Hermosa... Redondo.. Manhattan, Surfing is the only life!, all up and down the coast,, actually.. take your ax, and start shedding those waves.. its like s*x, you can't enough
