Although I used to be fairly athletic and I have experience with swimming, cycling and running, gone are the days when I was any good at them whatsoever. Considering the fact that I'm quite out of shape what are some good distances, or methods of training that will help me ease back into everything?

  1. First thought is start back slow. The comment "I'm quite out of shape" could mean a few things---should you start back by walking and running and progressing to running?  or do you have a road bike or an older commuter bike? Another thought is track minutes not distance. Start with 20 min of running--10 min of swimming and 30 min of biking slow...and progress from there. Don't become over zealous and injure yourself. We can talk HR ranges and tempo training after you get some mintues under your belt....so to speak.  The first few weeks can be 1 swim 2 bike and 2 run/walks---the second week 2 swims each 10 min ...2 bike and 2 run/walk.  Mark

  2. A sprint is a great way to get a good start.  I have found out the hard way many times that you really need a good base before doing anything too serious.  So really take your time and read everything you can get your hands on.  www.trinewbies.com actually has a schedule for beginner triathletes which would be great to get started with.  I wouldn't invest too much into a bike until you know you are going stick with it for awhile - you can even use a mountain bike for your first one.

I love triathlon and the kind of shape it gets you in.  I decided three years ago to quit smoking, lose weight, etc... by doing triathlons - I'm hooked now, have lost 30 pounds during that time period and enjoy every workout.

  3. Start with a sprint distance race.  If possible enter one in your hometown. You need to train for all three legs (Swim, Bike, Run) I like to rotate workouts each day.  There are some good books on training and how to build up your endurance. also, www.beginnertriathlete.com is a good site to look at.

If you have any health concerns go to your physician and have a check up be for you start training.

Have fun triathlon is a great way to get fit and feel better
