  1. Go through a study abroad organization.

I always refer students to AFS  (www.afs.org), but there's many out there: Rotary Club, YFU.org, Nacelopendoor.org, etc.

  2. If you are in high school, you need to go through a certified exchange student program. Make sure it is CSIET listed (www.csiet.org) or you could have problems down the road, especially transferring any credits back to your current school.

You should also ask your school counselor for a recommendation. Chances are, you have (or have had) exchange students in your school. Your counselor will have a good feel for which organizations are helpful and which are not. Generally speaking, AFS, YFU and Rotary are reliable everywhere. Rotary will be the cheapest, but most competitive. YFU offers some nice scholarships to Japan.

I hope you're not trying to go next year (2008-2009). Applications for that year are long closed, with the possible exception of a second semester slot. You should apply as soon as possible when school begins for the following school year, especially if you want to use Rotary or get a scholarship.

For lots of info on becoming an exchange student, check out http://www.exchangestudentworld.com/ -- an online community of exchange students who offer good, practical advice.

    Good luck!

  3. I'm not sure where you go to school at but most schools have programs designed for that. You can always check that out or you can try this website.

You can also do a google search but be careful when checking out websites. Also look in your community some cities have host programs  as well. Good Luck I would love to go to Japan!!!!
