  1. homeopathy and reiki are good.

  2. Nutrition and biology are the foundation of alternative medicine because we in the Alternative Medicine field feel that most problems have nutritional cures. Nutrition will help you understand connections between nutritional deficiency and some diseases. Biology will help you understand how nutrition effects cells and how diseases are caused in cells.

Example: Every time we go into the sun we get something called thymine dimers. These are bulges in DNA caused by radioactive sun rays. You body cuts these out and replaces them with new amino's to prevent cancer. There also is a radioactive ray in the sun that imitates potassium so people that are deficient in potassium might be more susceptible to DNA skin damage.

At the same time I would research one herb at a time and look for warnings as well as how it is helpful. The main warnings to look for are drug interactions, allergies it might cause, active ingredients that might cause some problems and anything else you find in reports articles and research.

For example again:Spirulina had a report that it was used to get radioactive out of Russian children in Chernobyl after the nuclear melt down. Two Harvard University doctors made an extract of it and called it calcium sirulan and in four days it removed a golf ball size tumor from a hampster in FOUR DAYS!

Lastly never take one or two sources and except it as fact. Look for all of the negatives and positives about an herb. Keep in mind too motives of reporters such as you will even see here how some doctors will claim that herbs don't work. They are completely clueless and I haven't lost an argument  EVER when a doctor has tried to prove herbs don't work. I even made a Northwestern professor look like an idiot in front of 35 classmates when he tried to say herbs don't work. He lowered my final grade and I told the dean to get any nutritionist in the world and prove I didn't get 100% on my final. Because I busted him he was suspended the next semester.

Now the reason for my story isn't to make myself look good, but to warn you and prepare you for what you are up against. At school nutritional and biology teachers may or may not believe. So believe in you own research that is tested and NOBODY can question truth. I served over 300,000 people at 8 health food stores so when people here try to spew out myths I have no hesitation in correcting them even if they are doctors.

Finally doctors ARE GOOD and do a great job mostly even though they make many mistakes too. In my opinion we need to work WITH doctors not against them.

Make you own mind up and good luck!

Ps. Write me with any questions.

Edit: "Skepdoc" above me is an example of someone who tries to deny truths about herbal medicine. I hope he engages me in some e-mails because when it comes to alternative medicine he's clueless and has an anti herbal agenda!  He actually wrote that there is no cure for colds! Olive leaf extract has cured EVERY SINGLE cold I've had for years within an hour!

Edit2: I don't know if you read what you are writing, but here you did not say anything is plausible. Also when I have seen thousands of people that have beaten the common cold within one day I'd say it's a cure! You are running into a buzz saw in this debate! Also I referred to your comment on no cold  cure in someone else's question.

  3. If you want to be a millionaire I hope you take advice from Richard Branson or Donald trump and take any advice you hear from the tramp living under the bridge on the way to their offices with a pinch of salt.

Skepdoc has once again given an answer which displays his ignorance so well and hasn't disapointed!

Its interesting how he talks about learning how statistics are missmanaged. Does he really mean med school teaches you how to missmanage statistics and data?

Most acredited programs which teach a therapy to graduate level require a background in sciences such as Chemistry and Biology. Mine certainly did.

If Skepdoc actually looked at the the sylabus's of Altmed education centres he may be surprised.

Perhaps it is time for him to look at alternatives after such a hard grounding in his conventional field and take his own advice.

I will refer you to my previous answer to a related question.

I hope you do find a field in complementry medicine you will enjoy and wish you the best of luck.

  4. Alternative Health Methods are numerous and very different from one another.

You need to find out about most of them to make yourself an opinion so that you can choose what most appeals to you.

For your last year and for college I would choose classes which give you most insight into human nature and if possible anatomy, physiology, pathology and psychology. You don't need physics nor chemistry unless you like those classes.

You will be dealing with people and you need to know as much as you can about people in the physical, mental and emotional area.

What you need to learn about the alternative method itself will be taught to you when you take the specialized training after college.

I think you're making a good choice! It's very rewarding to work in those fields. Wish you the very best!

  5. It all depends on what aspect of Alternative Medicines you want to study. It's kind of like saying you like ice cream. There are so many flavors, which is your favorite? I happen to be a Licensed Massage Therapist myself. I specialize in deep tissue work and Maya Abdominal Massage. I am also looking to further my education to become a Naprapath, which is a cross between a massage therapist and a chiropractor, and incorporates alot of nutritional counselling. There is also chiropractic, herbal medicine, acupuncture and midwifery among many, many more. You could even become an MD with a holistic mindset, which happens to be a great combo, not to mention a wonderful bridge between allopathic and holistic practices. My husband sees a holistic MD who has virtually non-existent record for sending people to the ER due to illness. She is THE most amazing doctor I have ever met, very knowledgeable in everything and would rather not have her patients on meds of any kind.

Either way you will need a very heavy background in life sciences. Anatomy & physiology, chemistry, biology, as well as most of your basic gen. ed. requirements for a life science degree. Depending on what area of holistic medicine you plan to study, chances are you won't be getting your degree at a 'normal' college. Look to find programs for the area you want to study, and research the different schools and programs. Depending on where you're located, I may be able to recommend some schools. Contact me if you want.

  6. You had a lot of options made to you so far, yet not many directing to wards energy psychology, which is a newer development. Not sure if these courses are available as college courses or just through independent trainers as they are here in teh UK. Check out EFT emotional freedom technqiue and EmoTrance for transforming emotional energy. Having started myself as a naturaopth/herbalist...I have progressed to energy healing modalities as in many cases they are faster....many problem causes being down to how we process (badly ) the energies of life through our energy system. So restoring the flow of blocked energy in the body's subtle energy system by which ever technique is a great area to study. Websites: www.emofree.com for EFT and www.emotrance.com . Feel free to ask if you have further questions. Sandra....EFT and EmoTrance Trainer.

ps. you can be up and running as a practitioner and trainer alot faster than you think with really effective tools in the energy healing world.

  7. Alternative Medicine is a big field.  Do you want to be a naturopath, herbalist, massage therapist, chiropractor etc etc.

Check out colleges that train naturopaths, chiroprators etc and see what courses they require.

Best of all, speak to your school Guidance department, who should be able to correctly answer this question for you.

  8. check out the different schools. depending on which field of alternative medicine you want to go in will determine your basics/foundation classes.

Clayton College just requires you to use good grammar in your assignements. The course covers all the topics you will need to finish the course.
