Here are the deatils:

My friend Kyle got me into Tae Kwon Do, he is a 3rd level black belt, and I want to get back into martial arts(I took karate for 4-5 years and got close to the black belt). His instructer is likely to allow me to keep my belt ank for Tae Kwon Do, as long as i do some white, yellow, orange, red, and so on, belt classes. Now, here are my problems:

1. I am involved w/ theater, and i am afraid Tae Kwon Do might interfere.

2.I dont want to mess up badly and look like an ***.

3. I dont want to seem like i cheated to get into the upper belt classes, because i was allowed to keep my rank...

I really want to do this, to get in shape,a nd because i loved doing it.

BTW-I am 14

  1. Keep in mind karate and taekwondo are pretty different. Talk to your instructer and tell him about your worries. Go to some of the beginner classes like he said, and try them out. If you don't feel like your more advanced then that, stay with them. As for theater, depends how much your willing to train. I train three days a week, and have many other activities in between.

  2. Take the class, put on a white belt and test accordingly if you have a belt from a different style. You should rise back to your rank quickly since you have previous training.

If you have 4-5 years experience, you shouldn't mess up badly. It will be more embarrassing if you wear a high belt and don't perform better than a yellow. You will also lose all respect from the other students.

I've seen this happen in my dojo. Resentment is possible. I've had parents and students come to me and complain about a transfer student that retained his belt. The other school wasn't up to the same level as ours so his basics were off. All of the lower belt students didn't respect him. The transfer student became self-conscious and wished our instructor gave him a lower belt.

Be humble and take the lower belt. If you prove to be a high ranking belt, you will get to it quickly.

Tae Kwon Do will only interfere with theater if it scheduled at the same time.

  3. you should take your theator and just like train with ur friend ask him  besides wat type of thaetor u do

  4. lol well to tell u the truth...karate and tae-kwon-do are a little different but if u are in good shape it's more of learning the forms

it won't interfer with theater unless u got practice conflects ALOT i did tae-kwon-do w/ volleyball, basketball, and softball...so i think it's possible

i actually did make a *** of my self the first day of tae-kwon-do (i had been in karate to) i would just keep a low key until u know how the school goes, newcomers are often really anxious to show off (one time a new kid kicked me right in the nose when i wasn't looking...*sweatdrop* but he was aiming for my chest) so just see how the place runs before u rush in

and it's not cheating, u worked for 4-5 yrs for that belt so why not? it's like a school transfer, u take ur credits! xD

good luck! and if u really love it...what's stopping u? go for it! ^-^

  5. well this a rank you earned, so why not wear it if the instructor allows it, s***w what other people think, you just do your best to show them you are worthy.  The TKD forms aren't much different from Karate forms.

Sounds like you have to prioritize your time and at 14 years old, physical exercise is important.  Sara Michelle Geller (Buffy) was a brown belt in TKD and an accomplished gymnast.

At 14 years old, take your time, don't tighten your schedule to exclude things you enjoy, just enjoy them.  Your martial arts training may be good for acting eventually, TKD isn't wushu, but you know how to miss closely with a kick and pull a punch.

Take your time girl, enjoy life and you will find time for all good things.
