I live In England, and I'd like to take a gap year next year and I would LOVE to go live in New York for a few months.

I was just wondering - how would I be able to make money there, would I need a visa to get a job there? How much starting off money would i need? And would I be able to find somewhere to live easily? And what would be a good way to make friends there while living there?

thanks. Any useful websites would be appreciated. :)

  1. UK citizens do not need a visa to visit the USA for up to 90 days:

The only way to legally work is to get a work visa, and for that you first need an employer.  You can't get a work visa on your own.

Check British companies with offices in NY, and Amercan companies in the UK with offices in NY.  For example, Hilton and Marriott hotels hire international staff as interns to work in the USA.

Another option is to go to school in the USA. It is easy for UK citizens to get a US student visa, and it MAY be legal for you to hold an on-campus job.

Also search "international exchange programs USA".  There are a number of programs that employ non-citizens for seasonal and temporary work.  Do carefully check any program you might consider as not all of them are a good deal.
