We will only have a weekend or may be 3-4 days in there. We both would like to see places and take a lot of pictures.

Would places would you advise to visit?

What is the weather looks like in January in Rome?

Thank you for your time.

  1. The average high temperature during the day is about 8 degrees C (53 F). It could be somewhat colder, but normally it should be nice. On New Year's Eve and New Year's Day there will be big celebrations with large crowds around the Vatican and Piazza del Popolo.

Don't expect much to actually be open on the holiday, but you will be able to get good photos of the Colosseum, Forum, Pantheon, Spanish Steps, Trevi Fountain, Piazza Navona, St Peter's, ... all the usual tourist highlights. Personally, I like Santa Maria Sopra Minerva close to the Pantheon.

  2. Hello,

Rome weather is wonderful that time of year.  It is on the cool side reaching the high 50's during the day.

As for places to see, heres the short list:

The colosseum, the forums, the palatine hill, the circus maximus, the bocca della verita, the capitoline hill, the Pantheon, the piazza navona, the castel St. Angelo, the vatican museum, St. Peter's basillica, the trevi fountain, the spanish steps, piazza del popolo, largo argentina, Santa Maria Maggiore church, St. Peter in Chains church, San Giovanni in Lateranno and San Clemente.

If you have three days you can split them up like this:

Day 1- colosseum, forums, palatine hill, circus maximus and bocca della verita.  If you have extra time (which you probably  will) go up the hill from the circus maximus and see the Knights of Malta keyhole.  Well worth the walk.

Day 2-  The vatican museum (if you can reserve a tour), St. Peter's basillica, Castle St. Angello, Ponte st. Angello, Piazza Navona, Pantheon.  Spend the rest of the day wandering the city.

Day 3- Piazza del Popolo, spanish steps, trevi fountain, swing over to the Capucchin crypt in the Santa maria della Immacullata concepzione, the Santa Maria Maggiore church and then the St. Peter in chains church.

You should be able to see all these sites in three days with extra time each day just to wander the city.  Take your time and enjoy beautiful Rome.  If you get a good map, you will see that the above itinerary will lead you from one site to the next.  I named some of the more famous churches in Rome because of what they contain.  St. Maria Maggiore contains fragments of the crib of Christ.  The St. Peter in chains church contains the chains that held Peter and Paul in the Mammertine prison and also the Moses sculpture.
