  1. First, why do you think it is weight bearing?  (Understanding what to look for is important.)

Second, If it is weight bearing, do you have the knowledge and skills to proceed?  (If not, you need a friend or a carpenter to assist.)

Before you proceed, determine if the wall is in fact weight bearing.

A good clue to location of weight bearing wall is a wall parallel to the ridge of the roof (perpendicular to the roof rafter and ceiling joist), located near the center of the house.

Is your dining area on the opposite side of this wall?  Then you will need closer inspection.  (You may want to ask a contractor to perform the inspection and possibly the work to remove the wall and install the header.)  If there is an attic directly above this area, identify the type of roof construction, truss or stick-frame.  If it is trusses, then the weight is being transferred to the exterior walls perpendicular to the truss.  If it is stick-frame, you will likely find that the ceiling joists overlap at this wall, and will require support if the wall is removed.  This will require a header to replace the wall stud support that is being removed.

Before you can remove the wall studs, you will need to build a temporary wall to support the ceiling joists on both sides of the weight bearing wall, then you can remove the studs and replace with a properly sized and supported header or truss-joist.  (Once the weight is transferred to the header, these temporary walls can be removed.)

Of course, if you confirm that the wall is not weight bearing, the process is simplified because you do not have to deal with supports or transferring weight loads.  The wall can be easily removed and finish work completed.

Since this is a structural change (and probably requires electrical modifications), you will need to secure a building permit.  A building inspector will verify that your work is being done correctly.
