I am interested in teaching preschool and/or Pre-K. What types of certification do I need if I have a BA in another field? I want to work in the State of California. Thanks for your help. I am looking for a starting point. Also, what are some desired characteristics/ skill sets for employers in regards to teaching preschool/Pre-K?

  1. If you want to be an assistant teacher, you will need 6 units in early childhood educations (ECE). If you want to be a head teacher you will need 12 ECE units.

Many schools follow a teaching philosophy such as Montessori, Waldorf, High-Scope...If you want to teach in a program that follows that philosophy you will also need to be trained in that area. It is not always necessary but it is desirable. It is also desirable to have more than 12 ECE units as well as a CPR class under your belt. An employer just looks for someone who is easy to get along with, is creative, and has an understanding of great love for children.

    Good luck to you!
