I want to teach at the college level. How do I get a job?

I have just completed my masters in classroom technology and have been teaching 1st grade for 5 years. I would really like to teach education classes at a college for students who want to be educators. How can I find jobs for higher ed in my location? How do I apply for these? Do you just send a resume or is it better to drop it off? How about online teaching--where could I find open positions?

  1. Depending on your area, you can pick/choose the specific college/university that you most want to teach at, unless you don't have a preference and would teach at any of them.

You will want to go online (or you can call and ask) for an application.  Typically they are under the human resource page.  You should be able to see what openings the c/u has as well, but I've done this myself and if there isn't a listing I submit anyways (to be ahead if one does open up).

You will want to make sure your resume is updated (with Masters noted on it and your objective to be something such as college adjunct).  You will also need copies of your transcripts...I have found that just having a copy in the beginning will suffice, but if they contact you for an actual interview or plan on hiring you, they will want an official copy of you undergrad and grad.  You might hold off sending them straight off in the very beginning if each copy costs you money.

When I submitted mine I had a nice cover letter, resume, filled out application, copy of transcripts, and a copy of my teacher license.  About a week or so after I sent it, I made a 'follow-up' call to make sure they did receive it, and to ask them when they might fill positions and any other questions I might have.

  2. Apply here for teaching online

They have few courses for which they need online teachers.

Good luck with finding a job.
